You may be wondering what the results were of the star count survey we held earlier this year. Over 2,200 people took part – and unfortunately they found that light pollution in the United Kingdom is getting worse. ??We want to make our Star Count Week an annual event to bring thousands of people into the campaign against light pollution. And we’re working with the Government to reduce the spread of this intrusive night blight, alongside CPRE local groups campaigning for councils to introduce lighting policies.??Want to know what the light pollution in your area is like? We’ve mapped the survey results.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England today labels the Budget, ‘a massive threat to the environment’.

New recommended membership rates have been agreed for 2011. These reflect an increase in line with inflation and are the first increase since 2009 as there was no increase last year. However the rate for Parish Council membership is not being increased.

Survey on Light Pollution

According to a CPRE/British Astronomical Association Survey on Light Pollution, eight out of ten people taking part in a survey, published in April 2010 by CPRE and the British Astronomical Association’s Campaign for Dark Skies, have their view of the night sky affected by light pollution. Of those affected, half said their sleep had been disrupted by excess artificial lighting. CPRE and the Campaign for Dark Skies (CfDS) are calling on councils, businesses and individuals to take steps to cut their light pollution. We also reiterate our call for the Government to introduce long awaited planning guidance to control lighting.
