Director’s bulletin, December 2015

Merry Christmas and thank you to all our volunteers and supporters!

Wise words from ‘Green Hero’ Alastair Sawday

We were delighted to welcome Alastair Sawday to our CPRE Avonside Annual General Meeting one very windy evening in November. Alastair arrived by bike, rather windswept, in time to have tea and chat with CPRE members and volunteers before the event. Alastair has recently been awarded ‘Green Hero’ by Bristol Green Capital 2015, and he was incredibly modest about how he could justify such a title!

For those unfamiliar with his work, Championing sustainability has always been Alastair’s passion. He stood for parliament as a Green Party candidate, founded Avon Friends of the Earth and was vice-Chair of the Soil Association. His efforts to promote sustainability have led to the company being honoured with a Queen’s Award for Sustainability. It was also voted Independent Environmental Publisher of the Year – twice. Read more…

85,000 homes for the West of England?

building our future

Guaranteed to get the CPRE juices going, these are two new consultations on a Joint Spatial Plan and Joint Transport Study for the area covered by CPRE Avonside. We will be holding a workshop to discuss these consultations on Monday 11th January 2016 at the Jubilee Pavilion, Keedwell Hill, Long Ashton BS41 9DP (just behind the Long Ashton Community Centre) from 12.30-3.30. The event is free, just bring along your own lunch. To book, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
The consultations set out aspirations for new housing, infrastructure and transport needed in the area in the next 20 years. Current estimates (based on the West of England Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA)) state that we will need at least 85,000 homes by 2036 – 29,000 more than is already accounted for in local plans, existing permissions etc. The need for affordable housing is great, and is at a much higher proportion than is currently being delivered in this area. Read more…

Set up to Fail

set up to fail

CPRE have published a new report ‘Set Up to Fail‘ which shows that local authorities, and our countryside, are being put under huge pressure by housing targets based on flawed numbers. This is particularly relevant to our work on the West of England Joint Spatial Plan.

Based on detailed analysis of 54 local plans adopted in the last two years, by independent consultants, CPRE’s report shows that the current system is not working – not for those in housing need nor for communities trying to shape developments in their area. Read more…

More changes to planning in the pipeline

more changes

Not content with putting a new Housing and Planning Bill through parliament, the Government have also just announced a new consultation on the National Planning Policy Framework – just in time for Christmas. The aim is to speed up the planning system. The result could quite easily be the opposite.

It is in all our best interests to ensure that we build in the right places, meeting local needs, and considering good design, adequate green space and flood protection. Ignoring these basic standards, brought about by an effective planning system, will not bring long-term benefits.

We will be covering this consultation in our workshop on the 11th January 2016. To book your place, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. CPRE car sticker

I support our green belt

You should have received the above car sticker with your CPRE Avonside Annual Report and AGM papers this Autumn. Do remember to stick it to the inside of your car or window or in public view on a window at home. We will continue to promote the benefits of the Green Belt in our campaigning next year. For details of our national Green Belt Campaign and how you can share your stories and memories of the Green Belt, read more…
