Annual General Meeting

Our AGM will take place before the Star Gazing event in Hutton Village Hall, main road, Hutton BS24 9SN on 27th February 2020 6.00 pm - 7.00pm.

Chris Sperring will be speaking at 7.00 pm - 7.30 and Jo Richardson's star gazing activities will be running from 6:30 - 8:30, with Star Counts happening at 7:30 and 8:30.

As well as the usual business, we will be agreeing a new constitution as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation or CIO. This is a relatively new legal structure available for charities that wish to be incorporated - providing more protection for trustees and allowing business to be conducted in modern ways, particularly electronically. Our new constitution has been approved by the national CPRE Board.

As part of the new Constitution we will be proposing that we change the name of the Branch to 'CPRE Avon and Bristol'. Thank you to everyone who responded to our call for comments. We chose this name as it reflects the breadth of our area, yet locates us by naming our largest city. There are also around five river Avon's in the UK. We did consider CPRE West of England, which is the official title for our area. However, this was rejected by our neighbours in the South West Region. Interestingly, many people outside of our area haven't heard of West of England, and felt it covered the wider South West Region.

Following our request to our wider membership for new trustees, Charlee Bennett, who has recently moved to the area, has volunteered. She is currently Foundation Director at Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation, and was previously Chief Executive of CPRE Hampshire. We think she will be a great addition to our team.

Decision on Bristol Airport expansion

Doubtless you will have read that on Monday evening, North Somerset Councillors voted to turn down the airport's application to expand by 18 votes to 7. We were delighted by this result, and our Branch Chair, David Worskett, spoke at the meeting about the Economic Report we commissioned from the New Economics Foundation which refuted the claims made for economic benefit. The Report was frequently referenced, and we feel made a big impact on the case against expansion.
