Villages and Towns under siege - event tonight

Tuesday, 05 July 2016 13:21

This evening, CPRE Avonside is hosting an event for local communities all over the West of England who have a keen interest in the future of their local countryside.

Many communities feel their voices aren't being heard in the important decisions being taken about their countryside. The planning system locally is not protecting our countryside or delivering the housing that local communities need. Proposed changes to national policy could make this worse.

The new West of England Joint Spatial Plan due out shortly will be proposing more development, with housing numbers potentially overriding those already set for Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. CPRE Avonside believes that we need to build more houses locally, but they must meet local needs (more affordable housing) and be built in the most sustainable locations (we should build on previously developed brownfield sites before considering green field or Green Belt development).

We will hear from Brian Glasson of South Gloucestershire Council, who is working to integrate the environment in to the West of England Plan; and from Shaun Spiers, Chief Executive of CPRE who is campaigning to make changes at a national level that will enable us to better protect our beautiful countryside.
